In the domain of signal interconnects a jack is basically the opposite of a plug. It is the receptacle into which a plug is inserted. If you are plugging your guitar into an amp, for example, you will insert the 1/4-inch phone plug at the end of your guitar cord into the jack on your amp. People sometimes get the words jack and plug confused and use them interchangeably so be careful out there.
