The part of a condensermicrophone that's behind the diaphragm. The diaphragm is stretched over the backplate leaving a very small gap between them. The backplate and the diaphragm together form a sort of variable capacitor, the value of which changes as the diaphragm vibrates sympathetically with sound waves hitting it. This vibration modulates the supplied voltage between the two plates and gives the microphone capsule its output.

“Ninety-five percent of everything in this studio came from Sweetwater. My Sales Engineer is a lifesaver. I started working with him around 2005, talking to him about what my vision was for the studio. He was right there all the way.” Sidney Carter, Douglassville, PA
