Whole Rest

A rest or silence with a duration that equals four quarter notes (assuming duple meter) or four beats in a 4/4 measure. In many cases, a whole rest is also used to indicate a rest that lasts for an entire measure, regardless of the time signature. In both standard Western music notation and tablature, a whole rest is represented by a black rectangle hanging below the second line of the staff.
