What is a “Side-Address” Microphone?

Many microphones, such as all hand-held microphones, are “top address” microphones. Meaning the capsule is at the top or end of the microphone, so to record with the microphone, you point the top directly at what you want to capture. However, with a “side-address” microphone, such as the Audio-Technica AT 4033, the capsule is not pointing toward the top of the microphone, but rather toward the side. To record with one of these microphones, you must turn the side of the microphone toward your sound source. In general, condenser and ribbon microphones tend to be side-address microphones, while dynamic microphones tend to be top-address microphones.
