This refers to a series of hollowbody electric guitars with particularly shallow body depths (roughly two inches). The term was originally coined by Gibson when it shaved almost an inch and a half from its mid-1950s Byrdland model. The trend continued with other guitars in their line and eventually other manufacturers followed suit.
