There's no doubt that convolution reverb sounds fantastic and is clearly the future of all reverbs. Unfortunately, convolution reverbs based on implulse responses are still very CPU intensive. That will hopefully change somewhere down the road, but for now, if you hear dropouts or other unusual artifacts when playing audio back using a convolution reverb, it may be that your computer's CPU simply isn't up to the task. Many applications such as Native Instruments Kontakt 3 actually show you a visual (alphanumeric or graphic) representation of just how much CPU is being used at any time. Fortunately, many standard reverb algorithms that are included with various DAW applications sound surprisingly good. You may want to create a good mix and then use a single pass of your convolution reverb to process the stereo signal and put your mix into a specific sonic space, such as Davies Hall in San Francisco.
