Fatten Up Your Piano Parts with a Pad
12/28/2006

This is a little trick that keyboard players have been using for quite some time with great success, but it's definitely worth repeating as newer keyboard players may not know it. To fatten out a grand piano or electric piano part, add in a lush synth or string pad from either your internal ROM or via MIDI using a separate synth module. The idea is that as soon as the piano notes start to fade in a chord, the pad swells up and fills the space until the next chord is played. This really only works for slower material, though you can add any other instrument behind sampled pianos to fatten the sound. In the 1980s, it was very cool to play a grand piano sound and have a glossy electric piano part layered underneath. Though he may not have been the first person to do so, Grammy winner David Foster was well known for this little technique. In fact, Synthogy's Ivory (a collection of stunning virtual grands) includes a pad (with five different waveforms) and chorus effect that can be used along with the pianos to create a richer, fuller sound. Give it a try!
