Kurzweil Key Maps
12/22/1998

Here's a pretty tweaky one that came in from a Kurzweil K2000 user:

"I am trying to create a Keymap with a different Sample assigned to each key. I would like each Sample to play at its Root Key (no pitch shift), which for me is C4 in virtually every case. One approach was to change the value of each individual Sample's Root Key number to match the Key Range in the Keymap, but there must be a better way."

Our response comes from VAST programming guru, Daniel Fisher.

Along with all of the amazing Kurzweil features that are visible, there are also quite a few really usable tools that are less obvious. After you've assigned each Sample to a Key Range (leaving their original Root Key values unchanged) there is a double-button push that will make your chore much easier: In the Keymap Editor highlight either the Key Range value (ex. C0-A1) or the Course Tune value (ex. +0ST) and simply press both the "-" and "+" buttons under the Alpha Wheel. The Course Tune value will automatically be calculated to give you the correct pitch. This works best when using a single-note Key Range. If you do the double-button press while on a Key Range that spans several notes, the Course Tune will be calculated for roughly the center of the Key Range.

Speaking of non-labeled button presses: When you're not working on something important, try experimenting with double-press features. Wherever you are in the Kurzweil (Prog, Prog Editor, Sampler, etc.), try pressing button pairs and see what happens. It's often "just the thing" you need at that stage. Try: CHAN/BANK pair, "-"&"+" pair, Cursor UP & Down pair, Cursor Left & Right pair. Of the six soft keys, try 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th.

It's all part of the Kurzweil "mystique"! Have FUN.
