Quick Tonal Changes in Guitar Rig 3
05/20/2008

There are literally hundreds of ways in which you can change the overall tone or timbre of your guitar when plugging into Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3. But the fastest way to make fairly significant changes in your overall tone is simply by choosing a different cabinet. For example, let's say you've chosen to run your guitar through the Tweed Delight amp model. You'll quickly notice that it has only one overall tone control, which won't offer up much in the way changing your sound. Tweed Delight comes with a Matched Cabinet, and for some that might be just perfect. However, to make broader tonal changes, Native Instruments offers you the ability to pair the amplifier with almost any speaker cabinet, microphone, and mic position. And here's where the real fun begins! You could select a 2x12 British '60s cabinet or a 4x10 Tweed Alnico. You can also choose which mic you want to use and also whether the mic is on-axis, off-axis, at the edge of a speaker, or even far out into the room. In addition to choosing among the 17 available cabinets, you can choose any of five mics: Dynamic 57, Dynamic 421, Dynamic 609, Condenser 87, and Tube Condenser. Right there you have literally hundreds of tonal variations without even getting into effects. Often a simple change of mics or the mic position can make a dramatic change in your overall sound. Be sure that if you find a combination you really like that you save it before moving on to additional options!
