Mixing inside your computer

“How do I go about recording digital audio into my Powerbook while at the same time playing back from my digital audio program? Is this at all possible or do I have to do it in a two step process (run Vision, record the song out to DAT or something and then back into the Powerbook again). Obviously, I’d like to burn my own audio CDs of my songs.”

In general this depends upon your hardware and your software’s ability to utilize it. The native audio built in to most Macintosh computers is pretty limited, but some software (such as Pro Tools) can do a mix back to disk internally. This is usually a separate function in most software called Mix to Disk, or Bounce, or something like that. In some systems where a hardware audio card is employed there are other ways to accomplish this including, in some cases, routing the audio mix out of the card and then right back into it and recording it.
