OS X Issues and Edirol Keyboard MIDI/Audio Controllers

Edirol manufactures an outstanding line of compact USB/MIDI keyboard controllers that are ideal for use in environments where space is at a premium or where users want to have lots of knobs, sliders and buttons to set up for controlling DAW software parameters or sound modules.

Some buyers have reported complications getting their Mac computers running OS X to recognize the keyboards. The issue, according to Edirol, is the need to install the keyboard drivers WITHOUT the keyboard itself being plugged into the computer. The following suggestions apply to Edirol’s PCR-1, PCR-30, PCR-A30, PCR-50 and PCR-80 controllers:

Q: “When I attempt to install and use my Edirol USB product, I get the following error in OS X:

The following file has caused an error: ‘/System/Library/Extensions/RDUSB000[X].kext’

OR

The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/RDUSB0033Dev.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used.'”

A: Problems can occur if you install the driver with the PCR keyboard connected. For OS X it’s best to install the driver first and then connect the keyboard. If installed correctly the driver will appear in “Audio MIDI Setup” under the “MIDI Devices” tab even without the USB connection. In order to use Edirol products with newer versions of OS X, the use of the newest OS X driver from the Edirol website is required. Also, uninstallation and reinstallation of the extension is necessary.

  1. Unplug the Edirol device.
  2. Go to the location of the extensions on your hard drive:
  3. /System/Library/Extensions, and then remove any RDUSB000[X].kext file that is found. Remove it by dragging it into the trash.
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. Download and install Edirol’s updated OS X driver from the website.
  6. www.edirol.com/support/drivers.html/
  7. Reboot again – the driver installer will tell you to do this.
  8. Connect your Edirol product to the computer.

After these steps, your device should be working.
