Configuring your system for optimum performance

A lot of folks have found out how cool software synths and samplers can be. One of the most popular programs we sell is the Bitheadz Unity DS-1. Many of our customers are running programs like this on their “older” computer after they go ahead and update their main production machines. This is a good idea because these programs use enough of the computer’s overhead that they can interfere with the production work. Of course, these older machines aren’t quite as fast so it can sometimes be difficult to get maximum performance out of the software on them. Here are a few pointers for optimizing your Mac for use with software synths. For this example we refer to Unity DS-1, but the basics are not all that different for other programs.

1. Make sure you have the most current version of the software loaded. Most manufacturers regularly post updates on their websites.

2. Configure your system for optimum performance.

– Turn off Virtual Memory, Ram Doubler, and similar utilities. Disable Virtual Memory in the Memory control panel. This step is CRITICAL for fast ‘live play’ response time. The Mac OS default is VM ‘on.’

– De-install all debuggers (like Conflict Catcher, Norton Utilities) and reboot before launching Unity DS-1. Like other high-end music software, Unity DS-1 will not run when MacsBug or other debuggers are installed.

– Turn off AppleTalk. Disable AppleTalk in the Chooser, accessed from the Apple menu.

– Make sure the Sound Manager sample rate setting matches the sample rate setting in the Unity DS-1 control panel. Use the Sound, or Monitors & Sound control panel to set the Sound Manager sample rate. See the Mac Setup document for more information.

– Make sure the Sound Manager sound output level is at maximum. The alert volume can be less than maximum. Use the Sound or Monitors & Sound control panel to set the Sound Manager sound output level. See the Mac Setup document for more information.
