String Changing Intervals for Electric Guitars

Sweetwater Tech Tip Check out the complete archiveClick here »

Q: How often should I change the strings on my Gibson SG Reissue?

A: The answer to that question will likely be different for each individual guitar player. Some players find that once or twice a month is often enough, while others may go a year or more without requiring a change of strings. It depends a lot upon the individual’s preferences. If a bright, glossy zing is what you’re after, you’ll probably change strings more often. If you typically play with the tone control(s) on your guitar (or amp) set to darken the tone, you’ll probably need to change less often. If the plain (unwound) strings feel the least bit rough when you slide your finger along it, the string may be rusting or corroding and should be the signal for you to replace the strings immediately. Veteran players typically carry several sets of new strings with them and always wipe down the fingerboard well with a dry cloth after every gig. Rock stars with guitar techs may change strings after every concert just because they can.
