A microphone that is used to augment a stereo pair or other distant miking arrangement, to capture a single instrument or voice. For example, in a large ensemble accompanying a classical guitar, a spot mic might be placed on the guitar to ensure that it is loud enough to be heard over the backing instruments for either sound reinforcement or recording purposes.
