To bypass or divert from one path to another. In electrical circuits a shunt is a path of conductance that allows a signal or voltage to be routed to a certain location under the right conditions. This often relates to grounding issues, where a problematic signal, voltage, or interference is “shunted” off to ground where it is presumably rendered harmless.
