Should I Use a Speaker Cabinet If I am Using the Red Box?

Q: I like the idea of using the Hughes & Kettner Red Box 5 to feed the output from my amplifier onstage straight into the PA with speaker emulation, so I don’t need a mic on the amp. I still want to use a cabinet onstage so I can hear myself. Can I do that?

A: The Hughes & Kettner Red Box 5 connects between your amp’s speaker output and the input connection on your speaker or speaker cabinet, so yes, you will still use a cabinet when you are using the Red Box 5. The Red Box 5 is not a load box, so a speaker or cabinet should be connected in order to operate your amp safely, especially with a tube amp.
