MOTU Traveler Review
- Reviewed By Simon Picazo

The blue glossy Traveler box showed up at my door on a cold Alaskan evening in 2005. The warm glow of the gold-covered connections and the banks of I/O stole my heart and then immediately started pleading with me to connect them to other gear. Thanks to my turnkey install I was able to break free and get some instant gratification. All I had to do was plug in my FireWire cable to my laptop, select "Traveler" from my hardware pull-down menu in Digital Performer, and I was ready to record.

Since that evening I have taken my Traveler from Alaskan studios that had to be pre-heated for hours before use, to LA mansion weddings where it was 120 degrees at my position by the pool. I have recorded grand pianos in people's bedrooms and guitars in the artist's favorite music room. I tracked one full-length album in four hours just because I had my Traveler tucked in my laptop bag when I stayed at an artist's home.

The coolest thing for me about the Traveler is that I don't have to have a separate portable recorder, mobile rig, and professional studio. When I sit alone with the Traveler, it is the center of my pro studio. You can add Apogee converters to the Traveler or a high-end preamp or a digital mixer, or even an ADAT if you want to. It has so much: AES/EBU I/O, S/PDIF I/O, ADAT optical I/O, MIDI I/O, word clock I/O, eight analog ins with four preamps. The ability to monitor in up to 6.2 (8 analog outs) if you want to, or have four separate stereo monitor mixes through any digital or analog pair, is amazing!

The Traveler is friends with everybody but if you don't have all the gear that you eventually want yet (and who does?), it will be a solid, dependable replacement for whatever piece that hasn't joined your family yet.
