Korg Legacy Collection - Digital Edition Review
- Reviewed By Brendan Murphy

legacy n. , pl. -cies . Something handed down from an ancestor or a predecessor or property bequeathed to another by will.

I have a nice collection of synthesizers that has grown over the years. It includes both a Wavestation and an M1 which I have had since the early '90s. I was not going to be easily impressed by the digital edition of the Legacy Collection (also known as the KLCDE). I have many soft synths that I love but they often lack the essence of the original synth they are attempting to emulate. This is not the case with the KLCDE. In fact, the only thing I don't like about it is the word "Legacy" makes me feel a little old.

These sounds (that I love by the way) are just like the originals. I'm sure they must have imported PCM data from the original synths and expansion cards. There are hundreds of sounds that are organized and easy to find in the large plug-in window. If you are not familiar with the M1 or Wavestation sounds then it is well worth a listen. Both are unique in their own right and have made their mark in music history.

The user interface is a nice departure from other synths. It is a nice combination of classic original elements with modern features and its a breeze to navigate and program.

When I did this review I had no idea what this software sold for and I was quite surprised. When they were new, these synths would have cost well into the thousands of dollars. Even used, these synths and all the expansion sound cards are going for $1200 and up. At under $200 I can't imagine why every keyboard player with a computer wouldn't own this impressive collection.
