A guitar or bass pickup that does not require active (powered) electronics, such as an onboard preamp, in order to function. A passive pickup consists, at its most basic, of a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet; the string vibrates in the magnetic field generating an instrument-level electric signal that is sent to an appropriate amplifier.
