Orange Thunderverb 50 Head (Orange) Review

Thunderv50H

Orange Amps are known for their high-gain rock applications. The Thunderverb 50 has no shortage of that exact quality. At the same time the Thunderverb 50 is no one trick pony. It’s a two channel Class AB amplifier with loads of gain for rockers. It also has a clean that could be used for blues or even some jazz applications.

I used it with my 50′s re-issue Strat and got a very nice SRV tone that was perfect for classics like “Little Wing” or Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary.” Turn up the gain knob on that same channel are you’re working with nice classic rock overdrive sounds. I dialed in a sound that was reminiscent of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.”

Switching over to the B Channel you’ll get a similar clean with the gain turned down. However, turn it all the way to the right and suddenly my vintage single coil sounds like Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” The B Channel also has a great shape knob that will add a lot of tonal variety going from Metallica into “Crazy Train” or even Ted Nugget’s “Stranglehold.”

Overall, a great tube amp for any guitarist and with the built-in tube reverb and variable attention it will sound great at any volume.
