Literally, “in name only.” A nominal spec, such as nominal level or nominal impedance implies a “typical” or “normal” value. For example, a speaker with a “nominal” impedance of 8 ohms may actually range from 4 ohms at certain frequencies all the way up to 50 or more ohms at other frequencies.
