On guitars with set necks (that is, glued-in, not bolted-on), where the neck joint joins the body, there’s a certain amount of extra wood that extends into the body, both for support and to increase sustain. As an example, the long neck tenon on a historically accurate Gibson Les Paul actually extends all the way underneath the neck pickup route.
