Though this term specifically refers to music played on bagpipes at Scottish clan funerals, it may also refer to any piece of music that expresses grief or loss, most often a close friend or family member. Although it is similar in spelling, the Italian term lamento refers to a tragic aria in an opera of the Baroque period, most often placed before the climax of the piece.
