Free Reed

The specific type of reed employed in the accordion, concertina, harmonica, harmonium and the oriental mouth organ, all of which have a somewhat similar sound. Air pressure, generated by breath or with a bellows causes the reed to vibrate, thus producing the sound. In free reed instruments, it is the physical characteristics of the reed itself that determines the pitch of the musical note produced.
