Dual Sample Rates in DAW?

Sweetwater Tech Tip Check out the complete archiveClick here »

Q: I want to send a 44.1kHz signal out of my DAW’s audio interface, through a hardware compressor and EQ, then come back into the audio interface to record the signal to another stereo track. But I want the new stereo track to be at 48kHz because it will end up on being used for a video. Can I do this?

A: We’ve never seen a DAW that would allow you to simultaneously play back at one sample rate while recording at another sample rate. You’ll need to record the incoming audio at 44.1kHz, then use sample rate conversion, either in your DAW or in another piece of software, to convert the result to 48kHz.
