Q: I have heard that Fender ’65 Deluxe Reverb amplifiers have “bright” caps on the second (vibrato) channel, which, of course, makes the tone brighter on that channel. Can I remove that cap?
A: It is true that many amps, including ’65 Deluxe Reverb reissues, feature “bright” caps, designed to make one of their channels brighter than the other, to provide more tonal versatility and to help with darker sounding guitars — it performs the same function as the bright switch found on some other amplifiers.
Some players do like to remove that bright cap to make the two channels more similar tonally. While certain players may be capable of performing this mod themselves, we do not recommend doing this sort of thing yourself. Please take your amplifier to a professional amplifier service technician who can perform the mod for you and ensure that the right component is being removed. There are dangerous or even lethal voltages present inside an amplifier, even when it is not plugged in.
Please note: any mod performed on an amplifier will void the amp’s warranty.
