Damp

Or Damping. In musical context, the term refers to stopping or muffling the vibrations of a musical instrument. One example would be the placing of a player’s hands on the edges of a pair of cymbals or on the heads on a set of timpani. Another example is using the palm or edge of the strumming hand to damp (not “dampen”) the resonating strings of an acoustic or electric guitar.
