Cymbal Choke

A percussion performance technique where a cymbal is struck with drumstick, then quickly caught or grabbed with the same or the other hand in order to stop the cymbal from ringing. Cymbal chokes are used in many styles of music, but are particularly popular in hard rock, progressive, and metal styles, as well as in classical music, where the duration of the cymbal ring before the choke may be specifically notated by a piece’s composer.
