Bridge/String Contact

Sweetwater Tech Tip Check out the complete archiveClick here »

Q: My guitar has a Tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. The high E and B strings on my guitar are hitting the back of the bridge on the way down to the tailpiece. Is this right?

A: Most players prefer the string to only contact the bridge at the actual bridge piece. If the angle of the string to the tailpiece is causing it to hit the back corner of the bridge, you can fix it by raising the tailpiece slightly. You’ll likely find this reduces the string tension slightly and it may allow the string to ring a little more freely.

TIP: When adjusting a Tune-o-matic-style bridge or stop-style tailpiece, loosen the strings first. This will make it much easier to make the adjustment.
