Adjusting Guitar Amplifier Tone Controls

Sweetwater Tech Tip Check out the complete archiveClick here »
sweetwater

In honor of Guitar Month here at Sweetwater: Many players, when setting up the tone controls on a guitar amplifier, dial in the settings using the bridge pickup. Unfortunately, many times this results in the bridge pickup sounding great, but the neck pickup sounding muddy and dull.

Instead, try dialing in the settings while listening to the neck pickup. Once you have the amp’s controls set so that the neck pickup sounds great, flip over to the bridge pickup. You’ll likely find that it sounds too bright — but that’s why there are bridge pickup tone controls on guitars! Just dial back the bridge pickup tone control a small amount to tame the overly bright sound and you should be good to go.
