Today's Top Stories:

  EMU ESI2000

New in stock at Sweetwater Sound: EMU continues to kick out great samplers. The new ESI2000's are in stock now and going fast. The 64-voice rack mount unit comes with 4 outputs and 4 MB RAM (expandable to 128 MB). They also come with the ESI Production Set CD ROM and Protozoa CD ROM. All for a retail price of only $995.

Sweetwater has recently lowered the price on the Fostex CR300 CD/CDRW recorder. This unit is very competitive with the top of the line recorders from other manufacturers, but is now significantly lower in price. Truth be told (and why not tell the truth) it's transport is exactly the same as many of the "big boy" units.

This weekend is the last before Christmas. More scary, there's only two more weeks left in the 1900's! As soon as the holidays are behind us many of us will start frantically trying to get those end of the year tax write-offs purchased (oops, did I say that?). Please take advantage of our Holiday Gift Guide on line as well as our full Web store, but also remember we have many, many more products in stock that what you see listed at our Web site. Plus, more importantly, you can call us and talk to a real human expert who will be glad to help guide you through the myriad of choices. (800) 222-4700

M-S Stereo
Abbreviation for Mid-Side, a method of stereo miking and recording. MS recordings capture the relative intensity of different sounds across the stereo soundfield. In order to make an M-S recording one must deploy a cardioid pattern mic facing the sound source(s) and a figure 8 pattern positioned sideways to the source. The figure 8 mic is connected to two channels of the mixer, with one channel having its polarity reversed. Each of the two signals (one of which is polarity reversed) of the figure 8 mic, when combined with the signal from the cardioid mic produces either a left or right "image" that is roughly equivalent to two cardioid mics positioned with a 90 degree angle between them. The only advantage to the MS method is the user can alter the width of the stereo image by varying the relative levels of the two microphones. There are several disadvantages, most of which are a function of having two dissimilar mics reproducing the same signal. Of course they can't occupy the exact same space either, which produces other phase and frequency response anomalies.

Hooking up mics for M-S Stereo recording

"I am interested in using the MS method for recording to DAT in stereo. The method calls for two outputs from a bi-directional (figure-8) microphone (among other things), one of which is out of phase. How does one accomplish this?"

First, you need to get two outputs from the microphone. There are a couple of ways to accomplish this: 1) Use a "Y" cable between the microphone and the mixer. You can buy or build a mic cable that is terminated to two XLR male ends; 2) the preferred method is to use a dedicated high quality microphone preamp and split the signal after it comes out (this is much more robust than splitting the signal out of the microphone itself).

Second, you need to reverse the polarity of one of the outputs (not change the phase as you say above). In the "Y" cable example this is as simple as reversing the wires going to pins "2" and "3" on one of the male XLR connectors. In the preamp example you would need to reverse those pins on one of the cables connecting the preamp to your mixer or recorder. Many mixers have a handy polarity reverse switch on each channel you can use instead of modifying cables. Also, it is possible to buy adapters that will reverse the polarity of a microphone signal, but it really is just as simple as reversing pins "2" and "3" somewhere. Be sure to label your modified cable.
