Today's Top Stories:

  Updates and Upgrades
Steinberg has issued an installer patch for the 4.0 versions of Cubase and Cubase Studio, as well as for Sequel. This patch enables the owners of those products who are running Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" to install their version of Cubase from the installer DVD. Steinberg product specialists recommend that users then install the free update to 4.1. While this installer does allow Cubase 4 and Cubase Studio 4 to be installed on Macs running Leopard, it does not offer full compatibility with this specific Mac OS X version. Leopard will be fully and officially supported by Cubase and Cubase Studio with a later update to both products, which is planned for release in the first quarter of 2008. Steinberg has also reminded us that it has released a version 4.1.1.749 update for Cubase Studio, which adds the missing UV22HR dither plug-in and fixes an issue with the MIDI loops not being able to be imported or previewed.

The second generation of Sabine Navigators features a new hardware platform, new remote control software, intuitive wall-mounted remote controls panels, and a broader range of input/output choices for even greater flexibility. • Peterson TP-2 - The TP-2 clip-on pickup builds on the success of the TP-1 and packs it into an even smaller package. Yet at half the size of it's predecessor, the TP-2 is still amazingly easy to transport in almost any size instrument case. The TP-2 pickup clips onto any instrument and picks up its vibrations, totally isolating it from other sound sources for accurate tuning in any environment. Clip the TP-2 on the lead pipe or barrel of a flute or any round tubing on horns, bell of horns, or on various parts of a stringed instrument. The extra-wide jaws have padded ends so that there's no scratching when it clips on the bell of the horn of other instruments or various parts of a stringed instrument.

  Guitar of the Day
When most people think of Paul Reed Smith or PRS Guitars, they most often picture high-end instruments with stunning flamed maple tops and abalone bird inlays. But the truth is that way before Paul made his very first maple-top guitar, he was building all-mahogany instruments that were inspired by his love for the original post-1958 Les Paul Special. In fact, his very first guitar, built in 1975, was an LP Junior-style mahogany double-cutaway with a single wooden-covered P-90. Those early designs obviously never left Paul's mind, because his newest instrument, dubbed the Paul Reed Smith Mira, is a combination of old-school vibe and modern construction techniques. It has a flat-topped mahogany body that's slightly thinner (and lighter) than other PRS guitars, thus its basic tonality is a departure from other PRS models. The impression one gets is a purpose-built guitar with the features, playability, and commitment to quality found in the entire PRS line. A pair of versatile, coverless Mira pickups can be coil-tapped to produce a wide range of tones, from a classic, smoky humbucker sound to a crisper, cleaner single-coil sound that will cut through a mix when required. The Mira has a 25-inch scale with a Custom 24-style mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard with the PRS moon inlays. It's a fast neck that almost all players will find quite comfortable. There's also an integrated wraparound bridge/tailpiece combination and in concert with the standard PRS 14:1 Phase II low-mass locking tuners, you get great tuning stability and excellent intonation with a "less-is-more" approach. A matching pickguard and truss rod cover complete the picture. Naturally, like every other guitar built in the PRS factory, the Mira is designed to provide top-notch performance right out of the box and then for decades into the future. Like most products in stock here at Sweetwater, this one ships free via FedEx directly to your door. In stock right now we have the Vintage Cherry and Black models, but the Mira comes in a wide array of colors that include Lilac, Orange, Powder Blue, Sandstorm, Wild Mint and Vintage Mahogany.

New Old Stock (NOS)
The term refers to instruments or parts that were built at some time in the past, but which are in brand-new condition, and were never sold. In the 1960s, it wasn't uncommon for a family-owned music store to have guitars and basses in stock that had been sitting in inventory for several years before they were finally sold. Some players actually search out such instruments, as well as certain parts, such as original power or preamp vacuum tubes that were built long ago here in the U.S.

Massive Licenses
Q: Can I install my Native Instruments Massive Synth on both my desktop and laptop computers, or will I require a separate license?

A: Native Instruments understands the needs of today's musicians. Thus you may install their software on both with the caveat that they may not be in use simultaneously. Go ahead and install the software on your second computer and then complete a new activation for that computer's System ID at the NI Service Center. You'll receive a second activation key for using Massive on that specific unit.
