| Skip Back Sampling |
| First introduced on the Fantom-S, Roland's Skip Back Sampling has become popular with musicians for its ability to instantly retrieve a performance and turn it into a sample. With Skip Back Sampling, your ideas never get lost because the sampler is constantly recording every note you play - be it on the keyboard or Dynamic Pad Bank - while keeping the musical bars in tact. The concept is somewhat like the newly popular DVR (digital video recorder) machines that are always recording the signal passing through them. In both cases there is a buffering system that keeps a finite amount of the material that has just occurred on hand. If you hit record it will instantly save all of the material in the buffering system. The effect of this is somewhat like being able to go back in time and save material that occurred minutes ago. This capability will no doubt be expanded upon in the future, possibly under a different name. |

| MOTU 828, track ID's and the S/PDIF port. |
Q: "Will the MOTU 828 audio interface pass subcode information, like track Ids through the S/PDIF port?"
A: Track IDs and other subcode info are stored in unused bits that are part of the digital stream that make up a S/PDIF signal. If you record or patch thru an S/PDIF signal via a MOTU interface, this subcode info will be included. However, if you alter the level of the S/PDIF signal, it changes the bits and this subcode info may be lost.
So, for example, let's say you have a CD player with only optical S/PDIF out that you wish to transfer to a DAT machine with only Coax S/PDIF in, and you wish to retain the subcode data during this transfer. You can record the signal into your 828 via optical and play it back via Coax, but you must not alter the signal's level while it's in your recording application, or the subcode data (track IDs, etc) may be lost. |
