Today's Top Stories:

New Remedy For What Ails You
Our friends at KeyToSound have announced version 1.1r3 of their free Remedy virtual instrument. There are versions available for VST, AU, and RTAS platforms. Remedy is a cool little free instrument that we enjoy using, but to really experience what KeyToSound is about, you've got to try Nexsyn - it's an amazingly powerful synth, with incredible tweakability.

  AlphaTrack and Live
The latest driver for Frontier Design's AlphaTrack compact DAW controller - v1.2 - adds support for Ableton Live, version 5.2.1 or higher. Metro, Samplitude, and Sequoia also now support AlphaTrack, and there is enhanced support in Reason 4.0.

  Cool Tool: MXL MicMate
Looking for an easy way to get a single mic into your computer for creating a podcast or for a quick recording? The guys from MXL dropped by today with their new MicMate - definitely a cool tool! The MicMate has a USB jack on one end, and an XLR on the other. There's an LED indicating the unit is working, and a 3-position pad switch. Just plug in your mic, and hook the MicMate up to your computer's USB port, and you're ready to go. The MicMate is powered via USB, and can provide phantom power for condenser mics. Best of all, the thing costs less than $80. We have them in stock.

Ferrule
Ferrule is Latin for "small bracelet." The word has many definitions, such as the band of metal that holds the eraser on the end of a pencil, a part on a golf club, a metal band used on the crown or root of a tooth, the tip on a walking stick or crutch, the white section of a pool cuestick that holds the padded tip, the metal band between the head and handle of a paintbrush, a component to align/protect a fiber optic cable, and so on.

In musical terms, a ferrule is a small band of metal used to keep wooden instruments from splitting, and also the band that holds the fibers on a violin or other bow. On string-through-body electric guitars like the Fender Telecaster, a ferrule is a small cup-shaped piece of metal with a hole in the end that secures the string in the back of the guitar body. Ferrules are also used with screws to secure the neck on some guitars and basses with carved neck heels where a neckplate won't work.

Here's a tip from Sweetwater's professor of plug-ins, Daniel Fisher:
If you have a favorite plug-in host application for your Mac, like Native Instruments Kore, MOTU Digital Performer, or Ableton Live (to name a few), you can use this simple trick to load your current setup every time you boot your Mac.

Go to System Preferences, and double-click on Accounts. Click on the Login Items tab and you'll see a list of applications that will launch on startup. To add you own, simply click on the + symbol and browse to the desired file (such as a Kore Performance, Digital Performer file, or Ableton Live file).

Don't check the Hide box as this will hide your app after you open it.

Now you can start your Mac and have everything ready to make music without a single mouse click.
