  Guitar Of The Day
While most guitar manufacturers are busy building advanced designs, they all know this single truth: There's nothing that makes a guitar player feel more comfortable than the knowledge that they're playing an instrument that's stood the test of time. This Gibson SG Custom Reissue comes to us via the company's Custom, Art and Historic division, and includes a number of high-end features that show why the SG was so hugely popular in the 1960s and well into the '70s. By now, most of you know that the SG replaced the Les Paul in the Gibson line in 1961 Ð in fact, early examples (upon which this reissue is based) came complete with a "Les Paul Custom" nameplate on the truss-rod cover and between the neck and the neck pickup. Most SGs shipped with the popular cherry red finish over the sleek mahogany body with beautifully beveled edges, but a few were built in either classic white or black. This one's white and the contrast with the gold hardware and ebony fingerboard with real pearl block inlays is stunning! What really sets this beauty apart is that it's one of the few Gibson guitars with three pickups. And not just any pickups! This baby is equipped with three '57 Classic humbuckers - essentially reissues of Gibson's famed PAF (Patent Applied For) pickups, which some say are the best the company ever produced. But the SG wasn't just about good looks and a smoldering tone. No sir, this guitar came with one of the fastest necks Gibson (or anyone) else ever built. What's more, the unique body design allows easy access right up to the highest frets. But there's one additional item that also sets this SG apart from most other Gibsons, and that's the unique, engraved Maestro Vibrola tailpiece. This truly is an astonishing recreation of one of Gibson's most iconic instruments. Comes with certificate of authenticity and a Custom Shop hardshell case.

Manual
Yes, this is the instructional documentation that comes with your new hardware or software, explaining how to use it. But "manual" also has a more historically significant definition. On pipe organs, harpsichords, clavichords, and so forth, the term refers to the keyboard. It actually evolved over the years from the German word, manualiter, which roughly translates to Òon the manuals,Ó which in turn means playing with the hands. A large pipe organ may have as many as four manuals, which would include three sets of black and white keys plus the pedals. Each of these would typically be coupled (or linked) to a set of stops, which would allow the player to access a variety of pipes, and thus create unique voicings.

Importing audio into your projects from CDs at 48kHz
Q: I'm using a lot of material from CDs in a Final Cut Pro project. What's the easiest way to import audio from CDs at 48kHz?

A: You import audio the same way you would any digital media. To import from CD, do the following:

  1. In the Finder, double-click the audio CD icon to open it, select and drag the desired .cdda audio files into your project's media folder.
  2. Rename the files so you can remember them
  3. Follow the procedures for importing files or folders into your project or timeline.

Final Cut does do sample rate conversion in real time, but it's not optimized for audio quality. For higher quality conversion, you can convert using the Export feature or when you render the project.

An easier method for converting audio to 48kHz on import is to use Apple's iTunes. You can set your preferences in iTunes to convert from 44.1kHz to 48kHz as the application imports the CD audio track directly to your project's media folder. To convert audio in iTunes, use the following steps:

  1. Open iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences, and click on the importing icon.
  2. In the Importing pane, choose AIFF Encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu and Custom from the Setting pop-up menu.
  3. In the AIFF Encoder window, specify the following:

    Sample Rate: 48.000kHz
    Sample Size: 16 bit
    Channels: Stereo (or Auto)

  4. Click OK.
  5. Back in the Preferences window, click the Advanced icon.
  6. In the Advanced pane, the iTunes Music Folder Location field shows the currently selected folder for the CD audio you're about to import. Click the Change button and navigate to your project's audio media folder. Click Choose, and then click OK.
  7. . In the iTunes play list window, choose the tracks you want to import by marking their check boxes and then click the Import button.

The CD audio tracks will be converted to 48kHz and appear in the destination folder you selected in step 6, ready to import into your FCP project.

Extra tip: Don't import audio tracks by directly dragging them from a CD into the Browser window of Final Cut Pro. Once you remove the CD from your computer, your project will no longer have access to the audio file.
