We Welcome PedalTrain to the Sweetwater Family
PedalTrain is the latest innovation in guitar effects pedalboards. These are professional tour-grade pedalboards and cases at prices almost everyone can afford. Each PedalTrain is constructed of durable aluminum alloy, one of the strongest, yet lightest, metals in the world, yet it weighs less than the same size piece of 3/4-inch plywood. There are no moving parts to loosen or wear out, and with a durable powdercoat finish, your new PedalTrain will last you a lifetime. A unique, open frame, and an elevated, angled design provides added flexibility when configuring the layout of your effects, while your connecting cables can be neatly routed over, under, and through the open slots in the top surface area of the PedalTrain to keep the risk of possible accidental disconnection to a minimum. Pedals may be added, removed, rearranged, or bypassed quickly and easily. All three models include plenty of industrial-grade, adhesive-backed, hook-and-loop material, along with detailed instructions to make setup fast and efficient. You can easily and securely mount virtually any effects pedal, volume or wah pedal, or other device, such as a power supply, channel switcher, power strip, direct box, or wireless receiver. Check out the top-of-the-line PedalTrain PT/PRO-HC:

  • Pedaltrain PT/PRO-HC - This pro-quality pedalboard includes a rolling flight case that's ready to protect your stompboxes as you take them on the road or in an airplane. Constructed with amazingly durable, lightweight aluminum alloy, the PT/PRO-HC was truly designed with the playing and touring guitarist in mind, with the maximum in routing options that minimize the possibility of disconnecting crucial cables during a performance. This Pro version also boasts more interior space for your power supplies, effects and accessories. It's a whopping 32" so it can effortlessly hold your entire effects chain while its tour-grade flight case is complete with lockable latches and low profile wheels on one end for the ultimate in convenience and portability. It's even got extra interior storage space that's separated by a solid divider wall - perfect for holding spare cables, sets of strings, picks, and everything else you'll need when on stage or in the studio.

Other sizes of the Pedaltrain pedalboard include the PT-2 and PT-Jr, each of which are available with either a hard shell flightcase or a gig bag-style case.

  Guitar of the Day
Johnny Hiland seemingly appeared out of nowhere and blew everyone away with his ability to play in a multitude of styles, from raw blues to country to classic rock - despite being legally blind! What's more, he can play at breathtaking speed where necessary, yet like so many other guitar heroes, he can wring all the soul right out of a single note. When it came time for Johnny to choose his namesake guitar, it's no surprise that he turned to the master builders at PRS. The Johnny Hiland Signature model starts with a carved, figured maple top that has just the right amount of figuring - it's actually quite reminiscent of the tops found on those astronomically priced vintage 1950s maple top guitars. The body is constructed of premium tropical mahogany, which has proven over the last half-century to be the best match for maple tops. For pickups, PRS decided not to use anything stock. Instead, they wound pickups that made Johnny happy. Since he plays in so many styles, his pickups have to be able to cover a wide range of tones, with tightly focused highs and lows, along with beautifully complex mids.

The neck is a surprise. Johnny wanted a 24-fret neck that felt like the maple necks on the guitars he grew up playing, complete with a maple fingerboard. The neck is bolted on, rather than glued in - once again is a feature that Johnny specifically requested. The blonde maple fingerboard has contrasting black position markers and a stylized PRS 513 bird inlay at the 12th fret. For additional tonal versatility, the Johnny Hiland Signature model comes with a push/pull tone control that splits the coils, delivering a sound that's a lot more like a guitar equipped with single-coil pickups. Johnny also wanted a 3-way blade selector switch, because this is what his first serious guitar had. Also standard are 14:1 low-mass, locking tuners along with the silky-smooth PRS vibrato, which can handle quite a lot of use without throwing the strings out-of-tune. Naturally, this unique guitar ships direct to your door via FedEx absolutely free in a deluxe, plush-lined PRS hardshell case.

Short-scale Bass
For the novice bass player or the electric guitar player who had to often double on bass, the short-scale bass was a blessing. A typical long-scale bass is typically about 34 inches from the nut to the bridge, while the short-scale is just 29 inches from nut to bridge. This makes it easier for students to learn on, as well as making it far more comfortable for electric guitar players to handle. On 34-inch scale bass guitars, the first five or six frets can be difficult to play because they are so far apart. However, a 29-inch scale bass has a scale length that's much closer to that of a 25-1/2" Stratocaster (just 3-1/2 inches separate the two). Most name-brand guitar companies have released short-scale basses at various times, beginning in the late 1950s, though the '60s saw the introduction of many additional short-scale basses because of the sudden explosion of teens who wanted to play in bands after seeing The Beatles and other groups appear on nationwide TV shows.

The Importance of Earth Connections
Many players forget that their amplifier is plugged into a 110-volt power source. Anyone who has ever had a 110-volt shock will attest to the fact that it's a nasty (and potentially life-threatening) experience. Under no circumstances should you ever disconnect an earth (or ground) connection on an amp. Never use an adapter to plug your 3-prong electric power line into an older 2-prong electrical outlet (even if that corrects a noisy ground loop). Most shocking experiences on stage occur when a person playing a guitar or bass that has grounded steel strings touches a microphone connected to an improperly grounded PA system. We suggest purchasing a simple light-bulb based "mains tester," which looks sort of like a screwdriver, but has a high-value resistor and light bulb. Touch the tester's leads to your mic and guitar or anything else that's plugged in; if the bulb lights, there's a problem! This is an easy and safe way to verify that there is no dangerous current/voltage present that might be dangerous.
