Sennheiser Will Announce Affordable Mini-Shotgun Mic at NAB
Dubbed the MKE 400, this lightweight, highly directional mini-shotgun condenser microphone from Sennheiser was designed specifically for use with digital camcorders. Though the MKE 400 may be small, its features are impressive, and include switchable sensitivity, a wind noise filter, extended battery life, and an optional, professional accessory kit. The directional super-cardioid/lobar pattern allows the MKE 400 to very precisely pick up sound exactly where the camera is being pointed. A control key on the permanently polarized condenser mic allows users to adjust the sensitivity to match the camera type, and permits reliable recording of low-level sound sources. The MKE 400 delivers over 300 hours of professional quality sound on a single AAA battery, and an LED indicates low battery voltage. The mic ships with a foam windshield, battery and shock mount in a robust metal case. An optional accessory kit suitable for those filming extensively outdoors includes a professional grade fuzzy windscreen and a 3.5mm jack-to-XLR adapter that allows the MKE 400 to be used with professional cameras.

  • Royer SF-24 Live - This stereo ribbon mic is a phantom powered version of Royer's SF-24 that's designed for live use, combining the SF-12's high quality audio performance, outstanding stereo separation and imaging, plus Royer's exclusive active electronics system. The thicker ribbons used in the SF-24 Live are designed to help it stand up to the rigors of the road. And while the studio version of the SF-24 is a popular choice for drum overheads, the SF-24 Live brings that sound to the live stage. Like an SF-12, the SF-24 Live is actually two matched ribbon microphones placed one above the other, each aimed 45 degrees from center in the classic Blumlein configuration. The magnet/polepiece structure of each ribbon transducer allows a wide, uniform frequency range with no substantial peaks or dips, and the two ribbons produce superb a transient response.

  • Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Enclosure - This enclosure puts that great Fender look and vibe in a compact 1 x 12" extension cabinet that complements your amp! The Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Enclosure features a great-sounding Celestion G12P-80 12-inch speaker, housed in a closed-back cabinet that not only fits neatly under your Hot Rod Deluxe and Blues Deluxe combos, it adds a little extra volume and low-end thump to your tones! Power handling is given as 80 watts, but the cabinet weighs in at a comfortable 41 pounds. Covered in classy black textured vinyl, the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Enclosure gives you great sound and classy looks! It's also in stock now in Emerald, Texas Red and White Lightning.

  • Ultrasone HFI-780 - These headphones give you an incredible, natural-sounding 3-D listening experience in a very comfortable, foldable design with an extended low frequency response. Closed headpones can produce a perception that the sound source is in the center of your head, but not the HFI-780. Using improved S-Logic Plus technology, these "cans" deliver an incredibly room-like sound sensation, where directions and distances can actually be heard and perceived. Plus, the sound quality and perceived loudness (40 percent lower dB output for the same loudness) allow you to use these headphones at substantially lower volume, reducing the risk of hearing loss. When not in use, the earcups fold back and up without having to remove the headphones - a real time-saver.

  Guitar of the Day
Although today's Guitar of the Day is a Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 with a rare one-piece quilted maple 10-top finished in a color PRS calls Tortoiseshell, we also happen to have Black Cherry, Dark Cherry Sunburst, and Tobacco Sunburst Custom 22s in stock right now, all of which have 2-piece quilted maple tops. As most of you already know, the Custom is - and probably always will be - at the heart of the PRS line, although the company unveiled a number of significant new models at Winter NAMM. It's available in 22- and 24-fret configurations, with the 24-fret version being dubbed (no surprise) the Custom 24. But let's get back to today's Guitar of the Day, our Tortoiseshell CU22.

You probably already know that PRS guitars are about more than looks. Just as much effort goes into making them sound and play great. The sound comes courtesy of a pair of Dragon II pickups, which strike the perfect balance between vintage and modern tones. These are the exact same pickups PRS used in its wildly expensive Dragon Series guitars (and in fact, the Custom 22 is really a production version of the Dragon, but without all the mind-blowing inlay work). The neck on this particular CU22 is given as Wide-Fat, which is our personal favorite, although all PRS guitars have superbly playable necks. Naturally, it has a rosewood fingerboard with those trademark PRS abalone bird inlays. A 5-position rotary pickup selector lets you choose the warm, smoky crunch of humbuckers, but also splits the coils in series and parallel to give you that glossy sound normally associated with single-coil pickups set to the "in-between" positions. This stunning Custom 22 ships in a plush-lined hardshell case absolutely free to your door via FedEx.

Ground Bass
A short melody, typically played in the bass, which is repeated over and over again while the upper notes played by other instruments may change or evolve. The term originated in England in the late 16th century and at the time referred variously to the melody itself, the harmonic framework constructed around it, or the entire composition. A ground bass part may vary greatly in length from a few notes to a full-length, extended melody. A modern example of the ground bass is heard in the opening of Pink Floyd's "Money."

What To Do When You Run Out of Authorizations for your EastWest/Guantum Leap Virtual Instrument
If you've purchased an EastWest/Quantum Leap product (their excellent Symphonic Choirs, for instance) and have experienced so many crashes that you have no more authorizations left, don't panic. If you plan on reinstalling your EWQL product on the same machine, launch the Registration Tool located at MacHD > Applications > Eastwest > YOUR EWQLSO Product and write down the authorization code. Your system ID will not change by merely uninstalling your product and reinstalling it.

To uninstall any EWQL product from your Mac, you must delete the following files (Note that "EWQL" has been substituted for a specific product name):
MacHD > Applications > Eastwest > EWQL folder
MacHD > Library > Application Support > Digidesign > Plugins > EWQL
MacHD > Library > Audio > Plugins > Components > EWQL.component
MacHD > Library > Audio > Plugins > VST > EWQL.vst
MacHD > Library > Preferences > /EWQL.plist
MacHD > User (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.native-instruments.EWQL.plist
MacHD > User (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > EWQL.plist

Please note these .plist files may not all be present for your product. However, you will have at least one .plist for your product in MacHD > User (Your User Name > Library > Preferences

After deleting these files, empty the trash. If you still cannot install and authorize your library, contact Native Instruments about getting a new serial number. You'll need to fill out a form describing the problem.
