Today's Top Stories:

  The Big Show
The annual Winter NAMM tradeshow opens its doors tomorrow in Anaheim, California. Be sure to check back with inSync for coverage from the show, and visit Sweetwater's complete NAMM report for a comprehensive listing of the new gear introductions at the show. Winter NAMM is the big "new product" show for most music/pro audio manufacturers, and in spite of the economy, this year looks to be a banner year for new gear. Our team will be walking the floor and bringing back info on everything new and cool for us to drool over.

  Drawmer Drops Prices
Great news: TransAudio Group, the U.S. distributor for Drawmer has announced that due to the quirks of global currency and other facters, the price of all Drawmer products has been dropped by 25% in the United States. Nothing else has changed, all Drawmer gear is still manufactured in the UK, as always. Expect these new prices to hold for as long the dollar/pound remains stable - meaning now is a great time to buy the Drawmer processors you've been wanting!

  iLife Up-to-date
Apple has announced that if you purchased a Mac that came with an older version of iLife, you can upgrade to the brand-new iLife '09 for less than $10.

  Updates and Upgrades

  • BIAS has updated Peak - including the Pro, LE, and Express versions - to v6.0.5.

  • Audio Ease has updated Altiverb to v6.3.1. The new version includes fixes to both the VST and TDM versions.

Fret Crown
This is the part of an instrument's frets that protrudes above the fingerboard. The fret is secured into the fingerboard with the tang, which is pressed or glued into a slot in the wood (or whatever the fingerboard is made of). The crown is the actual part of the fret you see, and that you press the strings against to sound notes. Various crown sizes are available, which can radically change the feel and response of the instrument, and may even change the tone to a certain extent.

Fret crowning is the process of using files and other tools to reshape the frets, especially after they have been leveled or dressed by a tech or a partial or total refret has been performed.

Quick Pro Tools Plug-in Access in OS X
Here's a tip that a Digidesign rep passed on to us; he uses it for dealing with the Pro Tools Plug-in and the Pro Tools Unused Plug-in folders on Macintosh computers. In Mac OS X, when you open the window for the hard drive (double-click on your hard drive icon). On the left, you'll see a row of icons for the Network, hard drives, Desktop, Applications, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and so on.

The cool thing is that you can drag any folder into that space and it will show up as an alias. So an easy way to deal with the two Pro Tools plug-in folders is to drag both onto that left-hand space. Now you can select one, and quickly drag plug-ins to the other. It's an easy way to enable/disable Pro Tools plug-ins!

(Note: If Pro Tools is running, you'll need to quit and restart in order for plug-in changes to work.)
