  Motown Turns 50
January 12th marked the 50th anniversary of Detroit's Motown - this was the day on which Berry Gordy received an $800 loan to incorporate his Motown Record Company. A year-long celebration is planned, which was kicked off with the declaration of the day as "Motown Day" at a ceremony featuring many government officials and a range of celebrities, including members of Rare Earth, Martha and the Vandellas, the Four Tops, the Miracles, the Funk Brothers, and more. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is also participating in the celebration with an exhibit that opened on January 1. Numerous releases are planned for the year, including a documentary film, DVDs, and album releases from the Motown archives. Over the past 50 years, the label has had nearly 200 hits, and has featured the talents of an incredible list of artists, engineers, and producers. Motown founder Berry Gordy sent a message to the kickoff celebration reading, "Motown music was for everybody, and it grew out of love. It has spread around the world and has become part of the culture and consciousness in all seven continents, and it all started right here."

The downloaded version is completely free, but will expire in one year. Note that installing GTR Solo will uninstall all currently installed V5 plug-ins. After installing GTR Solo, you will need to re-install all your Waves v5 plug-ins. Be careful though, you're going to be hooked...but don't worry, the full version will be waiting for you.

Preamp Output
One half of an output/input loop found on some guitar and bass amplifiers that is intended to send a line (in some cases, instrument) level signal to an external piece of processing gear or an external amplifier. Combined with a power amp input on the same amp, the preamp output can serve as an effects loop.

Preamp Out/Power Amp In
Q: I saw a video demonstrating the limited-edition Fender Hot Rod Deluxe guitar amp on another site, and the guy said that the preamp out connection was to feed an external power amp, then you should bring the power amp's output back into the Hot Rod Deluxe using the power amp input connections to feed the internal speaker. Is that correct?

A: Absolutely not! NEVER connect the speaker outputs of any type of amp to anything but a speaker or a suitable power attenuator/dummy load or damage will result. (Always check the manufacturer's recommendations before connecting anything other than a suitable speaker to a power amp's output.)

On the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (and virtually every other similarly equipped guitar/bass amp), the preamp out/power amp in is designed to function either as an effects loop or as a way to daisy chain amps together.

The preamp output connection is intended to feed effects processors and recording gear. You could also use it to feed the power amp input on another amp.

The power amp input connection is intended to receive signal from an effects processor or the preamp output from another amplifier. This input feeds the internal power amp of the Hot Rod Deluxe, which in turn powers the internal speaker and external speaker jack.

The Hot Rod Deluxe's owner's manual clearly describes how to use the amp's Preamp Output and Power Amp Input connections.
