This time out, he's put together the definitive glossary of music technology and pro audio information. This one belongs on everyone's bookshelf.
  • BLUE Icicle - Looking for the fastest way to get great-sounding audio into your Mac or PC? Then look to the Icicle! It doesn't get any easier than this - just plug a mic in one end, connect the Icicle to your computer with a USB cable, and start recording with your audio software. Features include 48V phantom power; a studio-quality preamp; analog gain control; and a balanced, low-noise analog front end. Cool! (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
  • Apple LED Cinema Display - You can never have too much computer-screen real estate - especially if you're a laptop user! And if you're a user of the new Macbook and Macbook Pro with the Mini DisplayPort, then the Apple LED Cinema Display will give you a 24'' crystal-clear display space, with 1,920x1,200 resolution. Controlling Harsh Guitar
Electric guitar amps can sometimes sound harsh when they're miked up. Here are some tips for controlling the high end when miking an amp:

  • Try different mic positions - centered on the speaker, near the edge, in the middle. Different frequencies may be emphasized by different areas on the speaker cone.

  • Angle the mic - turning the mic slightly off-axis will change its frequency response and change the sound.

  • Pull back - a bit of distance can allow the sound of the amp/speaker to "develop" a bit. After all, we never listen to an amp with our ear pressed tight to the cone (thank heavens!).

  • Fix it at the source - don't forget to try different guitars, different amps, different speakers, different amp settings, etc. Get it sounding right acoustically, then place the mic in a way to best capture that sound.
