Most important: start with a great voice. From there: AKG C12, Telefunken mic pre, no compression, no EQ, just Mogami cable to a Studer A80 running Ampex 499 @ +5dB re 250nW/M.
Simple luxury.
Neuman U67 into a V76 mic pre into a Tube Tech mono compressor to a Studer multi-track
AKG C12 VR, Neve (Brent Avaril) 1272
AKG C414B/TLII through an Avalon VT737SP into whatever recorder is there...
Very fine played instrument, Good Acoustics, Pre-Amp, Recorder (Digital or Analog) , a well designed Control Room and a Coupled Electro-Acoustics. Thank you!
My buddy's rig in St. Lucia simply rocks.
1 M-149 > 1pr. Neve pre's > dbx166 comp/lim > i/o > computer(protools)
telefunken 251 , neve 1073 , dbx 165 , apogee ad 1000 , "tape"
Neumann M149 or Sony 800G >> Brent Averill Neve 1084 >> Tubetech CL1B >> Otari RadarII
Making masters, getting compliments..... :^)
AGREED! Even though I definately prefer a high quality setup like avalon preamps, apogee converters, etc,... it is all in vain without talent and technique. One of the best vocal recordings I ever made was through an originall akgc3000 mic plugged directly into a mackie 24/8 mixer with a cheap as heck compressor.
An incredible voice

Simple and sounds incredible!!!
Great song and voice
Soundelux U95S or Beyer M500 mic
Great River MP2-MH or Peavey VMP-2 preamp
RNC or Cranesong Trakker (if necessary) compressor
Recorder of some type:>)
Lately it has been a Neuman TLM-103 into a Peavey VMP-2 tube mic preamp and a little lite compression from the RNC 1773. I never thought that I would find a Peavey product that I like so much.
I am satisfied with a good mic followed by a good mic pre followed by a limiter. I used Alesis XT20's so that chain keeps it simple and clean. The limiter ***ures me that I'm using all the bits possible. I would only consider using EQ on a vocal track to notch out any annoying freqencies, but if you use the right mic combined with proper possitioning, there should not be that need.
I have many:
Could be a U47 >neve1066>LA2A...
Could be a Radioshack Hi-Ball 8>some piece of ****preamp or distortion box...
It all depends on what kind of sound you want to come out on the other end........
