The AT4047 or the Blue Baby Bottle for recording both acoustic guitar and vocals.

    Hey all,

I'm looking for another mic to record both acoustic guitar and vocals. It gonna be used for singer/songwriter material.

I currently have an NT1000, NT3 going thru an Mbox.

    Budget is around $1000.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

both mics that you specified in your post are not known for being "versitile" in comparrison to others in the same price range. THe Blue baby bottle and 4047 are pretty uniquely flavored. With the other mics you mentioned already having, I would suggest maybe the AT4050 or Shure KSM 44, or maybe even a flavor of 414. These should be a little more versitle than a 4047 or baby bottle. Not that those are bad mics, just that I havn't found them to work great on more than a handful of sources.

So once again....check into the 4050, KSM 44, AKG414 uls or tlII, all should be within your price range.

I hope this was helpful. GOod luck

    Buy nice, or buy twice.
I have a KSM44. (I also have an NTK, which will surely be recommended before the end of this thread. Both good mics.)
I have never heard the 414, but there is surely a reason that it is so popular. Look hard at that option.
Also the soundelux...ifet7? They have one that runs about $1200 that is a copy (w/ a few mods) of an old Nuemann U47. (The solid state version.)

Let me stop you before you buy a baby bottle. I've been working with a guy in his home studio and his "best" mic is a baby bottle, he loves it because it's a blue mic, but I don't like anything about it. I've used it for a room mic, male vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion and I haven't been impressed with the sound at all. Even through a nice pre it's not a mic I like at all. I presonally wouldn't recommend buying one.
I have also used the AT 4050 and I like it. I tracked some male vocals with it, and before tracking we did a shoot-out with a U89, AT 4050, and the Groove Tubes GT 57. The singer just said hi in each mic and I knew the 4050 was the one. Then I had him sing in each one and sure enough, I used the 4050. It's got a slight bump in the lower end, but if you don't need that it can be taken out with some subtractive EQ'ing. The mic had nice presence and sounded great on male vocals. I didn't use any fancy pre's, just an outboard comp (some off brand) and the pre's in a Tascam digital board.

I'm not sure what your price range is.....
I do know the 414TLII is a great mic and well worth the money, it will also sound incredible for what your doing. You might also look into the Studio Projects T3, NTK, and the AKG Solid Tube. I do know the Solid tube is a great mic.

I love the M-box BTW, nice unit for the $.

You're definitely the man! Great idea Hynek! Helps a bunch.

My wife just bought me the NTK and I still have the $1000 budget to use on another mic.

I think you will find the AT 4050 to be a very versatile and warm sounding mic for acoustic guitar and voice. That would be my first pick.

    good luck...
