It's not gear, but what about the mp3 format? It has completely changed music. Some would argue that it's for the worse, but I say "hey, how else can a guy like me, that would never get a deal, get his music out to the masses?" I can put up a free web site somewhere, upload a few mp3 files and I'm satisfied. People are hearing music I made. Yeah, it's not gonna get me the big house and fancy cars, or the spot on MTV's cribs, but that's not what matters.

By the way, this is my first post. I like this forum a lot!

The Rode NT1 was the microphone that introduced a whole generation of recording hobbyists to a more professional sound. They raised the bar for demo tapes everywhere.

the telephone. the true precurser peice of gear in our industry is the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell laid out all the ground rules for audio over a wire. The parent industry of our industry is the communications industry I.E. the telephone. I guess you could say the telegraph was the precurser of the telephone......

    Gear That Changeth Historage

I Believe That Reverb, The Echoplex And Distorted Speakers Were The First Effects.
As Far As I Know, Somebody Had A Blown Speaker And It Distorted Badly... Becoming The First "dirty" Guitar Sound.
Effects-wise, Besides Reverb, The Echoplex Was The First Actual Effects Unit.
Jimmy Page And Many Others Still Use It.
Chet Atkins Was The First One To Employ It.
I Know, Because A Guy Named Mike Battles, From Akron, Ohio (the Inventor) Told Me So.

Within The Last 25 Years, Though, Digital Has Been The Great Thang'!

That's My 2 Cents... What A Great Question!

true that... i own a 1969 wurlitzer which looks and feels good and my church has a hammond b4 with an original leslie that sounds like heaven and the p200 set the mark for solid, excellent sounding stage pianos everywhere. i played the crap out of a p200 for a few years and i broke my finger before the keys broke... =) and by the way- the wurly is the best sounding old school electronic piano this side of anywhere!

paiste? as in the cymbal manufacturer or paste?
-the best demo track a 30 dollar overdraft fee can buy... news just in- consumer reports has had to place the shure sm57 in a ranking all its own - "invincible" this category previously only known to chuck norris. in unrelated news, during the recording sessions of the "eyes of the ranger" theme song for "walker, texas ranger", chuck norris had to use an sm57 because every other mic melted in fear being that close to his mouth.

Heres my ideas for revolutionary gear that changed the world at least for me.

    1. The ADA MP! preamp. this revolutionary piece of gear brought all of the pros tones home at a resonable price. It allowed users the freedom to have different distortion presets. Think about how many records and tours that was used on. There is a reason it still has a large following years after ADA went out of bussiness. It was like a truck full of great amps all in one. with all the modeling amps out now its easy to forget this little engine that could but when it came out it blew peoples minds. Even the "big" amp companys like mesa and marshall rushed to try and top it. For its price it was a killer deal.
    2. the digitech 2100 series preamps they were one of the first to use dual disc technology that eliminated dropouts for good. Now guitarists didnt have to write thier music so that all the patch changes took place in a moment of silence. what a break through.
    3. The use of MIDI for guitarists. Now guitar players could have control over thier tones and gear like keyboard players have. Now a simple connection and a little programing and your MP1 could go to your clean sound and your EQ could change to a litle mid boost program and you FX could have a rich chorus with the push of one button. Push another one and you could have a delay soaked mid scooped lead! What a great idea!
    4. Thank god that record companys started spending money on production . Just listen to the difference on Dark Angels darkness descends disc and the production on time does not heal. it's a revolution!!! I never realized how great they were. unfortunatley alot of the 80s metal bands suffered the same way and thankfully it was solved. Kreator, Overkill, Death, even Dream Theater's first disc was poorly produced. Its easy to forget now that eveyone has Pro tools at thier finger tips but just look back at what it was and youll never take it for granted again!!!
