    Removing unwanted Microphone noise

    Hey,

I have recently recorded an inteview of two people. The problem I have is that I simply can't interview these guys again.

There is a lot of unwanted noise from one of the microphones rubbing against the shirt when he moves.

Is there anyway in Audition to remove this noise?

    Thanks alot.

honestly, you "may" be able to remove these unwanted sounds in edit view>spectrum with the select tool and the delete tool.

I think that the newer version of audition lets you use photoshop tools to fix stuff in the wave. you just have to be able to see the unwanted wave form.

Thanks a lot I will do my best looking at it tomorrow

Might be a bit too much to rectify. Wish I monitored more carefully at the time.

I am using audition 2 by the way

You might try getting a sample of the noise and reducing it with AA's noise reduction. If there are any spots where the noise is isolated that may work.

Yeah I did try doing that but there are no isolated points.

There is a bit of a problem. Is there any other software that you know of that will help more do you know?

    thanks

do it the hard way, with eq, compression, and stuff of that nature.

you may be able to use a de-esser plug if you use the spectral view and find the freq where the offending noise is and scrub it out.

got a clip you can post?

Sorry about the late reply mate. Was away on holiday. I do have a sample of the sound. Here is probably the worst area - mind you the other bits are not very good.

    Any ideas on this one?

You're going to have a very hard time removing that from the file. It's sharing a lot of frequency range with the VO itself. You can try some surgical EQ, perhaps in some of the higher frequencies. I don't think Noise Reduction is going to do anything for you. Might be good to put the parts in question through the spectral analyzer and see if you can pinpoint what the offending frequencies are, and try eliminating them.

I'm just afraid you'll lose some of the important frequencies of the file.

Thanks for the advice. I am a novice at all this, but does AA have a "spectral analyzer"? Or do I need to get different software for this?

    thanks

It will be hard but is possible.. First you have voice on left channel but is present also on right channel. Maximize right channel and clean this channel from noise. On this channel you don't have problematic noise. Second - Make new record emulating situation during original recording with no voice, just this noise from mice. Take example from new file with "Capturing noise " in AA2 and on old file try "Noise reduction". If you got some voices badly damaged, try to recover it with same voice from right channel. (always do only left or right channel - don't go stereo)

First of all make backup copy of file. Move mouse arrow up (for right channel) or down (for the left channel) until arrow get letter (L or R). Until arrow is with letter you can select just one channel. Best is if you select complete left (right) channel and copy it to an new mono channel.

Kope, you're a genius. I totally overlooked that Left Channel. It is pretty clean (comparatively). Nice call.
