So you are looking for an audio editor, but you don't want an audio editor?

I don't think you will get much help.

MP3's are audio files. You need an audio editor to edit audio files.

MP3 is a compressed format. It must be decoded to even be played (decoders are built into any application that can play mp3s). There are a few editors that will do relatively simple things, such as divide a large mp3 into smaller pieces or join some number of mp3 files into one larger file, but I don't believe anything exist that can do much more without first decoding to WAV.

The one and only problem with this is that re-encoding to mp3 is a lossy process, so more quality is lost every time one does it. Therefore, the only intelligent approach is to do a stand-alone decode to wav, use an audio editor on the wav file until all changes are made, then re-encode to mp3. If the bitrate was high enough to begin with, you may get by without audible degradation.

There is a great deal of information on mp3 topics here

and elsewhere on the Hydrogen Audio forum.

Does that make it an mp3+ file then? or an mp4?... sorry

Freeware Audacity, which is an audio/ogg vorbis/mp3/whatever editor, that does have some included "plug-ins", and will accept 3rd party plugins, some of which can be found at like kvraudio.com... Other than that, I know of no "freeware" audio editor that is *not* an audio editor...

For a "cheapie" quick and often-times "dirty" (excess artifact) cleanup job, Magix Audio Cleaning Lab does OK... If you "tweak" the settings, it can do better.

btw, as alluded to multiple times previously, you're better off "editing" a wave file, then converting to mp3...
    - er - I meant "not" editing...
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated. [OK]
