    CPU

    Hi!
I have question.I bought new CPU and install it to my motherboard. When I power up PC nothing happens but power light is on and thatt's it.I can open my CD ROM drives, but nothing on monitor any POST or Checksum.
When I switch to old CPU everything is fine.

    New CPU is 1200 GHz
    Old one 750Mhz.
I have CPU fan that reads on front"for CPU up to 1.2Ghz".I have 1.2GHz but should I buy better. It can be that problem?

    Please help me there.

    Thanks

try resetting the cmos , the correct jumper for it will be described in the manual. put the new chip in and reconfigure your bios.

    Can you tell me how?
    I don't have manual for the CPU.But it's new.

    It's 1.2Ghz Duron

I can't go to CMOS.I can't see anything on the screen. There is just power light and that's it.

that's why you need to reset the cmos using the jumper on the motherboard.

your best bet is to check out the site for the board and look for a manual or ask for settings. if you don't have the manual for your motherboard i can't help you further.

in case you have misunderstood; there is a jumper on your motherboard to reset the CMOS. You must look up the motherboard manual and find this jumper. Then you must put the jumper in the clear position for a few seconds (do not turn the computer on) and then put the jumper back to it's position. This will clear the CMOS memory.

I am presuming you don't have to set any jumpers on your motherboard to configure the CPU.

If you don't give specific details noone can give you specific answers.

I have Soyo mobo with VIA KT133 chipset. In the manual they says I don't need to set jumper setting, because it has auto-detection.That's only what I found about CPU upgrade.
And also how to clear CMOS.

yes the cpu will auto detect but it sounds like you must clear the CMOS settings. It's very easy for a bios to get confused without a proper reset, and the only way to accomplish this reset is when the computer is turned off. all new motherboards have a jumper to reset the cmos on the board.

you still haven't told me the proper motherboard version. There could be a few motherboards with that chipset.

i can't help you unless you give me exact information.

It's all very well you telling me that you don't need to set anything and it does it automatically, but your cpu isn't working properly, is it.

    Ok.
    I can try that.
But I should use clear CMOS setup procedure?
It's only I have in manual.

This is just a wild guess. AMD processors (esp. recent ones) are kind of easy to damage. Now, I am not saying that that's what happened to you, but I think you should at least investigate in that direction.

When you put your new processor on, did you use a shim? If you don't use a shim, it is very easy to crush an AMD chip when installing the heatsink on top of it (sadly, it's easy enough even with a shim).

Take your new chip out and carefully examine it under light. Do you see any scratches/dents on the edges? Even the smallest dent will kill your chip. I had that happen to a friend of mine when he was installing his new Athlon T-bird. He crushes his with a heatsink. He showed me the destroyed chip. All it had was a tiny little dent in one of the edges. That was enough.

Just remember to be very careful when dealing with AMD chips.

    Hi Eric!
I just reset CMOS but still without luck.
It's running but still nothing on the screen.
I don't think I have bad CPU I didn't have any POST beep code.
    Do you have any idea?
Also I found that I have A7VAT Mobo with VIA KT 133 chipset. It's about 2 years old.

i took a look on their site, there is no A7VAT that i can see. the closest to it with that chipset is K7VTA´which takes a maximum of a 1000mhz duron (1ghz).

    Thanks Eric!
    I just found out.
I had to manually set DIP switch for CPU Ratio.

Thanks for your time and help

Why did you get a Duron? Because it was cheap? I'm not sure it that is much of an upgrade.

I just use this computer for the office. It's already old and maximum CPU I can put is 1.2GHz and I bought this CPU for 20$ so why don't upgrade from 750Mhz to 1.2Ghz for 20$?
