    power supply

    hi
    Is it really important to buy an expensive power supply for audio performance?
    A generic 450w unit is about 40$ only.
    Noise is not a problem for me because my pc is in another room(you should try this believe me!)
    (I have: 2 hdd,1 cd burner,xp 2.4,amd chipset,motu1224,2 monitors)
    Could somebody cast a light on this?

    A good power supply is one of the areas that you dont want to skimp on. Toms Hardware has a good article on the need for dependable power. Here is a quote concerning using generic power supplies;

    "One possible cause of unreliability that is often overlooked by users is the power supply that is installed in their computer. Unless the computer was custom built and the user recently had the power supply upgraded, chances are that it may contain a less-than-capable power supply. Users who stand to fare the worst are those who have purchased their computer from a computer super store and/or discount retailer. These systems are generally fitted with cheaply made, low-cost power supplies, which often can sustain damage even under minimal loads."

    That's right.
    Get an Antec 400+ watt & be happy. They are one of the best & also most widely available at local retail outlets. Here's a recent review comparing 4 supplies. Antec/Enermax/Vantec/ThermalTake. The Antec came out on top. Antec supplies have come out on or near the top in every review I've seen comparing to several other brand supplies. Enermax is also decent & an often recommended buy but Antec has beat them slightly in performance in every review I've seen comparing the 2.

    Really bad power supplies can also fry your proccessor. And middle of the road ones tend to flucuate while you record. I forget how they found this out buy yeah get the above brand names to supply your power.
