    Win 2K or Win XP?

Ok, I'm in the process of building that computer...so far all I need is the soundcard (Audiophile 2496), hard drives, memory, and monitor. I'll probably order most of that stuff in the next few weeks. My question obviously is what would be the best OS for me to go with. I have access to either Windows 2000 or Windows XP (I also have access to previous versions of Windows but who really wants to do that ). Which would you all recommend? Any patches and fixes I should be aware of?

Oh, and for software, I plan to use Ntrack, CEP, "maybe" Cakewalk, and TRacks.

    Thanks

I have been using win2k pro and have hade no real problems with the os. it seems very stable and if you are used to win98, the interface is similar. i have some freinds that are using winxp and some are doing fine others have more problems than I could put in this response. with xp I think the updates are a must, but I have not updated my 2k pro yet and have had no problems as i said before. I am using a P4 2.0, echo gina20, 512 ddr. I have been very satisfied with 2k pro.

updates are no mst with xp, only helpfull for security when you are not using it as a DAW but going online as well.

I think XP is the cleanest yet (have used all windoze versions since 95).
the audiohile should run fine on xp, but check the sites of your audio software to see if there's any compatibility problems for xp.

And ehh 98se is still a clean option, which can be a nice solution if you'd want to run soft/hardware incompatible with XP.

Oh and go for XP pro if you have the choice.. gives you a lot more options, and runs slightly better than the home version.

    XP hands down

Someone started a poll over at www.homerecording.com and XP is winning by a landslide.

I've been using both Home and Pro with no problems for over a year.

I have been a windows user since version 3.1, and as far as I am concerned XP is the most complete and sleekest OS microsoft have produced. All my software runs no problems and I regularly leave the machine on for over a week at a time without needing to reboot. 2k Pro is a good OS, there is no doubting that, and shares many similarities with XP, but XP takes it if only for the extra built in hardware support, among other things. Gets my recommendation.

BTW I am running an Athlon XP system with a MOTU 828.

Hmm, its difficult to decide between 2k and XP, there both very stable and using the WDM driver is much better than other means, I have 2 DAW's at home, w2k on one, XP on the other and I cannot notice much difference in reliablility or Performance, but w2k does take longer to bootup but thats peanuts.

what software do you plan to run?
ask around. if xp pro works well with your software, then go with that. no sense buying a 3 year old os, when new development is going to center around xp.

Since you have access to all, why not try installing Win98SE first, then install WinXP to a second partition and use a dual boot configuration? Then, if XP doesn't work for some reason, wipe that partition clean and install Win2000.

Having the Win98SE partion will never hurt you, and it could be very useful in case the other OS gets screwed up for some reason. Configure the Win98SE for internet access and then you have access to drivers, tech help, etc., etc.

shhh, I think that someone who started the poll was...."me." hehe.

What can I say, I like to get a variety of opinions from different boards.

And I should go ahead and mention that the only things I need to get now are the monitor and soundcard. I'll probably buy some other accessories such as fans here soon as well. I'm gonna make sure and keep this system nice and cool.
