Is there any difference in speed/timing when running midi over USB? I've heard that USB is alot faster. Thanks!![]()

Midi was designed in the late-70s on 1900-baud slow serial ports.
USB is far far faster.
A keyboard with a usb port out just has a 1x midi-to-usb chip built into it rather than hanging outside in a box.
Zero difference.
Thanks! That's a really good explanation. I was under the impression that having to add an external midi to USB interface would slow things down but now I understand it's really the same process just done internally with keyboards or devices that have built in USB midi etc..

I'm doing some research for a company that converts Midi over Cat5 cables. The benefits are you can run Midi signals up to 1000ft. without any data loss or interference.
Thanks for the clarification on the set up above with the Midi to USB interface etc.. I still have a question though:
Even though USB itself is far faster.. does that mean that midi signals are transfered much faster over USB cables rather than standard midi cables?

and I understand the conversion internally with the midi 1X chip in a keyboard is essentially the same as an external midi/usu interface but once midi is running on usb is the speed different vs standard midi cables?
Thanks! hope that wasn't too confusing![]()
Thanks. Apparantly a standard midi to midi connection is still faster than a midi over USB connection even though the USB protocol by itself is much faster as mentioned. Interesting.
