    Yes. It sounds like you're scared by the fact that data for both devices ends up on the cable between the computer and the first device. But as mh explained most computers only have one FW controller anyway, meaning that if there were multiple ports on the computer they eventually combine to one data stream. In other words, the "Y split" is either going to be inside the computer or inside whichever external device is first, and there's no reason one should be better than the other.

    I have done exactly this (the daisy-chain) with 24+ track sessions and inputs on FW400 with no trouble, so I don't anticipate any reason this should be a problem with FW800.

    As already stated, the dual ports on the machine itself don't really get you anything extra except convenience.
